In 2000 Jaspar Corbett sold his stake in Mayfair Cellars, which he had started in 1989 on leaving Majestic Wine, where he had been since 1983. Mayfair Cellars had been one of the first UK wine companies to recognise the growth of fine wine drinking in Hong Kong and the company opened an office there in 1997.
Jaspar decided to take a break from the wine trade and in 2002 purchased the freehold of the local pub in the village of Pattiswick in Essex where he lived. The Compasses Inn was a great success and rather than a wine list, customers were invited to select wine from the wine shop attached to the pub. After just a year the pub was sold (unbelievably hard work !) – Jaspar left the pub but kept the wine business, now named Compass Wines.
Compass Wines has continued to grow since then and with a move to Suffolk in 2006, the business is back in Essex, now in Burnham-on-Crouch. Jaspar has a wide selection of interesting wines that he proposes to his customers.
As well as being a wine merchant, Jaspar also offers Wine Events and has presented fun and informative wine themed events in various parts of the world.
